How to Check a Bus Company Using FMCSA's Safety Measurement System

FMCSA's Safety Measurement System, known as SMS, allows the public to search safety information using a company name or USDOT number. It is the single most important tool a transportation buyer can use before booking.

Step 1: Ask for the USDOT number

Every legitimate passenger carrier has a USDOT number. Ask the company for its legal operating name and USDOT number before anything else. The USDOT number is more reliable than a company name, because many companies have similar names.

Step 2: Search FMCSA SMS

Visit the FMCSA SMS website and enter the USDOT number. Confirm that the company is authorized to operate and that it is authorized to carry passengers.

Step 3: Review the BASIC categories

FMCSA organizes safety data into Behavioral Analysis and Safety Improvement Categories (BASIC): unsafe driving, crash indicators, hours of service compliance, vehicle maintenance, controlled substances and alcohol, and driver fitness. Review each category for alerts or concerns.

Step 4: Ask questions

Safety alerts or missing information deserve follow up. Ask the company directly. If you don't get clear answers, look for another carrier.

Search FMCSA SMS now or read our full step by step guide.
